Right to Work is Wrong For Missouri

Unions have historically protected workers by establishing the political will for minimum wage, work safety laws, the banning child labor, etc. In the present day, unions provide invaluable training for young people to learn a skilled trade without the expense of $50,000 a year college tuition. Union workers are on the front line of public safety ensuring compliance with standards for construction safety, manufacturing safety, worker safety, and helping prevent sexual harassment and employer abuse. Standards that are enforced when an independent powerful force can stand up for them.
While this State spirals into “tort reform” and “amendments” to discrimination laws, the unions’ necessity will only increase. Each of these actions by the legislature has been pushed by corporations and their interests groups through a murky process that has allowed them to hijack this State. Each is an effort to protect corporate bottom lines while hoping the citizens do not see the near total destruction of institutions (Unions and the Courts) necessary to protect the public interest and hold corporations responsible for bad behavior. Remember, unions and trial lawyers did not cause the collapse of the economy in 2008, financial institutions did. Yet the focus of the Federal and State legislatures is on deregulating banks while weakening labor and diminishing jury trials? Missourians will not have the ability to hold their legislature responsible, gerrymandering made sure of that. But citizens can prevent the legislatures’ attack on organized labor by signing a petition to allow a statewide vote on “Right to Work”. It is a public safety issue.
